What is a Solopreneur

A solopreneur is an entrepreneur who operates and finances her business alone. In other words, a solopreneur is an entrepreneur who is responsible for everything related to the operation of her business, from planning to marketing to customer service.

A solopreneur is different from an independent contractor, who performs work for multiple business owners, in that a solopreneur is responsible for all aspects of her business, from payroll to record-keeping to marketing.

Most small business owners start out as solopreneurs at some point in their business’s history, but many in the modern workplace are only familiar with the term in the context of a freelancer or independent contractor.

If you’re a freelancer, entrepreneur, or work alone most of the time, you’re a solopreneur. But if you work with others, you’re a small business owner.

The average American spends 80% of their week in an office environment. Today people want flexibility and independence at work, but sometimes it requires sacrificing long-term stability to achieve your goals faster.

But once you decide to become a solopreneur, there are many positives that come with it:

You no longer have to worry about long commutes, you get to pick your hours, usually, work when you’re most productive, and create content for your future self (or another business). These things gave me the mental confidence I needed in order to make the switch.

5 Benefit To Become a Solopreneur

1. You get to work when you’re most productive.

Working from home can be challenging, but for me, I can’t work well if I’m distracted. I can get in a flow state faster when I’m at home and on my own. I can also go to bed at 9:30 pm if I want. If I’m at work I need to get there by 9 am.

2. You get to pick your hours.

I’m a night owl, so I’m usually in bed by 9pm, but if I’m on a work call, I’ll be on it until midnight or later. I think it’s important to find a balance between working hard and taking time to take care of yourself.

If you’re working all the time, you’ll burn out. That’s why I try to leave a lot of space in the day between client calls. For me, I need a lot of rest in order to be at my best.

3. You get paid when you’re on call.

You have to be a reliable worker. When you’re working for yourself, if you miss a session, your clients won’t call back. I recommend signing up to be a mentor for someone, because you’ll have someone calling you constantly and you’ll become familiar with the different ways you can work from home. This practice will come in useful when you’re working on your own.

4. You have peace and quiet for creativity

This is an obvious one, but you’ll have to make sure you’re not working all the time, otherwise, you’ll burn out. The best thing I’ve done for myself is to go on a retreat or to a cabin in the mountains. I love taking breaks away from my home, even if it’s just for a day. It’s very important to take breaks, so you can recharge and come back with a fresh perspective.

5. You can save money.

If you’re self-employed, you can negotiate lower rates. You’ll have to be a negotiator, but that’s how it works. If you’re an employee, you’re not going to negotiate your salary, and you’ll be stuck with whatever the market offers.

Being an entrepreneur is difficult. There are many sleepless nights and long, stressful days. But being a solo entrepreneur is even harder. The constant need for attention and the pressure to perform can be physically and emotionally draining.
